Mixed martial arts career
Background
Scanlon has been hampered by a series of injury problems[1] in the past.[2] These injuries caused him to miss the entirety of 2009.[3] Scanlon is a member of Team Kaobon,[4] where he trains in Luta Livre,[3] much like his training partner Terry Etim.[4] Scanlon is also highly touted by the Team Kaobon founder, Colin Heron, who said "Mark Scanlon is one to watch out for. He’s an undefeated welterweight and we have a lot of semi-pros coming through. It’s talent feeding talent. There is a lot to watch out for."[5]
Cage Gladiators
Scanlon made his professional MMA debut in September 2006, against Richard Evans at Cage Gladiators 2. After just over two minutes, Scanlon defeated his opponent via TKO (strikes).[6]
Over a year later, Scanlon returned to fight at Cage Gladiators 5 against Kevin Reed. Scanlon was able to hit Reed with several elbows, one of which opened up a large cut on his forehead. Later on, Scanlon was able to secure an armbar after three minutes of the first round, forcing the tapout.[7]
A few months later, Scanlon fought Gareth Burbridge at Cage Gladiators 6. After Burbridge began to fire off multiple punches, Scanlon decided to take his opponent down. After controlling the rest of the fight from top position, Scanlon won via submission (rear naked choke) in the second round.[8]
Scanlon fought once more for the Cage Gladiators promotion, defeating Greg Letch via heel hook in the first round.[3] Scanlon then suffered a series of injuries,[1] taking him out of competition for 17 months.[3]
Returning in February 2010, Scanlon defeated Marius Buzinskas, a veteran of the English MMA circuit, via choke in just 51 seconds. He went on to defeat Ousmane Sidibe via arm triangle choke in four minutes.[3]
In October 2010 - in what was Scanlon's final fight in England - he competed in the OMMAC promotion, where he faced Michael Reid. After just ten seconds, Scanlon knocked out his opponent via head kick. The knockout win garnered him some minor attention worldwide.[9] Just days later, he signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.[10]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
UFC 122 was originally set to hold a matchup between UFC newcomers Kenny Robertson and Pascal Krauss. However, in mid-October, Robertson withdrew from the fight.[11] Scanlon then signed with the UFC to replace him.[10] He lost the fight via unanimous decision.
Scanlon was expected to face Matt Brown on March 3, 2011 at UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann.[12] However, Scanlon was pulled from the bout[13] and replaced by Matt Riddle.[14]
Scanlon was expected to face James Head on November 5, 2011 at UFC 138.[15] However, Scanlon was pulled from the bout and replaced by promotional newcomer John Maguire[16]
Mark Scanlon has now been released from the UFC and is in negotiations to fight on Bamma 9.
