ASA Târgu Mureş was a football club based in Târgu Mureş, in central Romania. It was founded in 1962 and it soon became one of the best teams in the country. The club was dissolved in 2007.

History

The best performance was a 2nd place in the Romanian championship. It participated in 3 UEFA Cup campaigns, but was eliminated in the 1st round on all 3 occasions: in 1975-1976 by Dynamo Dresden, in 1976-1977 by Dinamo Zagreb and in 1977-1978 by AEK Athens. The team had a much better performance in the Balkans Cup in 1972-1973 when it reached the final but lost against Lokomotiv Sofia.

After the fall of the Communist regime in 1989, the team struggled between the First and the Second Division of the Romanian football and it was relegated to the Third Division at the beginning of this decade.

In 2005 the name was changed to Maris Târgu Mureş, but with no success, and in 2007, and the end of Liga III 2006-07 the team was dissolved, after it succeeded to evoid relegation and finish 12th in Seria V.

The most famous player that wore the red-blue jersey was László Bölöni, winner of the European Champions Cup in 1986 with Steaua Bucharest and former coach of the Romanian national football team, France Ligue 1 teams AS Nancy, Stade Rennais and AS Monaco FC and Portuguese giants Sporting. He was coach of the Belgian Topteam, Standard Liège from July 2008 till February 2010. Bölöli caught the Belgian national title in 2009 after thrilling play-off games against great rival RSC Anderlecht. But following the weak results during the 2009-2010 campaign (7th Place at this time) and in despite of a qualification for Europa League Final 16, he presented his dismissal that the club management accept.

ASA was the descented of CS Târgu Mureş, a club that played for 10 seasons in Liga I. After its dissolution it passed the torch to FCM Târgu Mureş to continue the football passion that exists in Târgu Mureş.
