- Lagos State University
Lagos State University (LASU) was established in 1983 by the enabling Law of
Lagos State ofNigeria , for the advancement of learning and establishment of academic excellence. The university caters for a population of over 61,000, enrolled in full-time and part-time programmes at the Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate.A summation of LASU objectives is given as to create opportunities for deserving candidates to further their education, by providing programmes of studies that will give them not only marketable skills, but which will enable them to develop to their full potentials and make them well-rounded scholars and useful members of the society. LASU is also to meet the specific manpower needs of Lagos State, as well as undertake any other activities, appropriate for a university of the highest standard.
Lagos State University was initially conceived as a multi-campus, collegiate and non-residential University. Today, Lagos State University operates a multi-campus system with four fully owned campuses having its main campus at
Ojo (along theBadagry Expressway) and other campuses atEpe (where the Engineering Faculty is located),Ikeja andSurulere , as well as five External/Affiliated campuses atAnthony Village ,Ikoyi ,Isolo ,Jibowu ,Festac andLekki . Also the present Vice Chancellor of the university Professor (of Physics) Lateef Hussain has embarked on a voyage of rebranding the university through the building of hostels within the Ojo Campus and the construction of the Private Virtual Network (PVN).Lagos State University is reputed for high standards, which it has maintained in its Law programme (in 2006, the university candidates to the Nigerian Law School produced more of the First Class candidates) and the solid foundation being laid in the Medical Programme, the first set of graduates, of which were turned out in year 2006.
The university has also over the years, maintained a tradition of excellence in various disciplines in Arts, Education, Engineering, Science and Social Sciences. Courses are now being run in the relatively new Faculty of Management Sciences and the School of Communication.
The present vice-chancellor is Professor Lateef Hussain, whose regime has been commendable in all ramifications.
