Following is a list of student associations at the University of Malta, Msida, Republic of Malta.
Association of Students of Commercial Studies
About ASCS The Association of Students of Commercial Studies (ASCS) is a non-profit making association, representing all students falling under the Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy (FEMA). Its office is currently situated in the Students’ house, together with the other student organizations. The following are the mission and objectives of ASCS as laid down in its statute: "Mission To serve as a catalyst, to promote and enhance the student's professional presence and image through awareness in our society.
Objectives ASCS shall strive to improve the standard of commercial education in Malta. It shall seek to improve the status and welfare of students of commercial studies in Malta, at the place of study and the place of work. It shall make representations to University employees, professional and other authorities, both local and foreign, connected with commercial education, in furtherance of the above aims.
It may publish its own journal and other material and hold seminars, meetings and other activities, in order to promote its aims. It may cooperate with other student associations, both local and foreign, in furtherance of these aims." (Statute of the Association, amended 2/07/03) ASCS started way back in the 1980s when the FEMA was still in its infancy and commerce students were only a few. But still the need for unity and representation was felt among commerce students, mainly in having a ‘say’ in the direction of the FEMA - and that is when ASCS was born. The mission and objectives enacted that day, although changed in words, are still fundamentally the same as today’s. Unfortunately, after a successful start, ASCS declined a little over the decade, but was revived again in the 1990s. Interestingly, one of its committee members at the time was Mr. Gordon Cordina, which today lectures in economics at University. During that period, ASCS was particularly successful, organising activities and seminars on a broader scale. In fact, one particular seminar was organised on a nationwide scale with a huge number of people attending including heads of state and other dignitaries. After this successful revival, alas, ASCS declined once again. It was again revived a couple of years ago, mainly in 2000 and continued to grow again over these two years - where a new logo and motto i.e. Il- Munitu were adopted. Website: www.ascsmalta.org
Department of English Student Association (DESA)
DESA website
DESA was founded in 2007 to respond to a growing need for a student body to represent students of English at several administrative levels while also addressing the studying of the humanities from a broader perspective. DESA aims at creating high quality academic events ranging from poetry readings to lectures by international scholars while also organising social events such as film screenings and quiz nights. DESA has also recently launched its online journal of critical and creative writings, TEXT, which is viewable on its website.
Għaqda tal-Malti - Università
This association was founded in 1931 by Rużar Briffa and Ġużè Bonnici and works towards the appreciation and prestige of the Maltese language and culture on campus and apart.
Its members include students from different faculties at University and other non-student members. It organises talks on Maltese language and literature, social events for students and the general public, exhibitions and monuments for Maltese authors and collaborates in publications on the Maltese language and literature.
Għaqda tal-Malti - Università forms part of a group of organisations for the Maltese language in Malta. These include, along with it, The National Council for the Maltese Language (founded through a Maltese Law), The Akkademja tal-Malti, Għaqda Poeti Maltin, Poeżija Plus and Inizjamed.
GħSL - Għaqda Studenti Tal-Liġi (The Law Students' Society)
Brief History
From the very start of student representation efforts in Malta, law students have always played a pivotal role. It was in fact at the beginning of the 20th century, on the initiative of a then law student, Arturo Mercieca (later Sir Arturo Mercieca), that what was then the CPU (nowadays KSU) was set up as the first student union on the island.
As the number of students increased, the need was felt for student representation efforts to be localised in the various faculties. Once again taking the first step, a group of law students, in 1943, at a time when Malta was still ravaged by war, set up Għaqda Studenti tal-Liġi (University Law Students' Society). This group of students was led at the time by a young student, going by the name of Joseph Ganado. This young law student was later to become Professor of Civil law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Malta, during which time he was considered as one of the pillars of the Maltese legal profession. Prof. J. M. Ganado at present occupies the post of honorary president of Għaqda Studenti tal-Ligi, along with other distinguished personalities.
Student Representatives
Today, Għaqda Studenti tal-Liġi plays an essential role in the law students’ academic experience at the University of Malta. It is enough to say that Student Representatives appointed by the Society, in every year of the law course, maintain a most needed link amongst the Society itself, the Faculty of Laws, and the students. A very important aspect which the role of the Student Representative entails; is the constant communication between these officials of the Society with all law students, to ensure up to date information being sent to everyone in the law course. One has to point out that these electronic mail messages are hugely popular with the law student.

The Society’s website also serves as an efficient and up-to-date online noticeboard, and its popularity is proven by a very high number of hits on the website practically all throughout the year. Here, one can find all that law students require, be it updated timetables, notices issued by the Faculty Office, other informal notices of interest to the law students, vacancies and traineeship opportunities, legal links, as well as information about both academic and the non-academic events, which Għaqda Studenti tal-Liġi ogranises throughout the academic year.
Seminars, Conferences and Publications
These efforts are complimented with the organisation of several seminars and conferences addressed by both local speakers as well as top foreign speakers. Għaqda Studenti tal-Ligi has organized a respectable number of conferences, which are of direct interest to the law student, and this explains the high participation to such events.
Another important activity which Għaqda Studenti tal-Liġi endeavors to undertake, is the active participation of the law student when it comes to express his/her opinion in legal matters. Għaqda Studenti tal-Liġi believes that there can be no legal development, without giving insights to the different legal issues that arise within our society. For this reason, Għaqda Studenti tal-Ligi has been proactive in issuing the Quid Juris? Law Journal, amongst other initiatives. This particular publication has been published for a number of years, and the leading idea behind such publication, is a publication written by the law student, for the law student. In this newsletter, great importance is given to the different articles contributed to this publication by various law students. The subject of these articles varies on different topics, and it is true to say that this has been one of the principal ingredients which helped the popularity of such publication, soar to very high standards.
An important initiative which the current Executive Board is working upon, is the publication of this newsletter in online format. It is true to say here that the last preparations are underway to launch the Quid Juris? Law Journal in online format, to ensure accessibility to all students through the world of the internet. One of the most important legal publication in Malta, Id-Dritt Law Journal, is also published by the same Society.
Thesis Library
Għaqda Studenti Tal-Liġi also boasts of having its own Thesis Library, located nearby the Faculty Offices, containing a collection of thesis presented at the Faculty of Law by law students throughout the years as well as a number of books and foreign journals kindly donated by the Society's benefactors. The Thesis Library has a vast collection of LL.D. and Masters Dissertations, as well as a variable collection of Law Journals. Borrowing from the Thesis Library is easy and flexible – any student can obtain his requested material with him, for a nominal fee. This is also possible since that the Thesis Library has a large variety of Dissertations in Compact Disc format.
Non-Academic Activities
Finally, the Society also takes care of providing law students with social events at which to do away with the stress accumulated as a result of hours of lectures and study. Activities range from pub crawling and parties at the end of examination period, most notably in January and June.
However, one of the most famous activity which Għaqda Studenti Tal-Liġi boasts to organize with huge success, is the yearly Graduation Ball, held in high quality, distinctive venues so that graduation can be celebrated in style, while ensuring that graduation will remain a memorable experience in the years gone by.

Greenhouse - Malta
Founded at the beginning of the 2008-2009 scholastic year, Greenhouse aims to create a permanent environmental presence at the University of Malta, where most of the local ENGOs originated. The group is autonomous and non-political though it openly engages with local NGOs on campaigns of nation-wide matters. The issues which the organisation holds most to heart are sustainability, environmental awareness, social justice and participatory democracy. In pursuit of their objectives they implement hands-on projects on and off campus for the students of the university and provide them with tools and networks with which to encourage students in engaging with the wider civil society outside of University.
S3 - Science Students' Society (S-Cubed)
The Science Students’ Society (S-Cubed/S3) is a Faculty based student organisation which represents all students following a course under the Faculty of Science on University, national and international levels. Its main aim is to unite science students through educational and social activities which are organised regularly throughout the year. S-Cubed also works to encourage the development of an environment more conducive to the advancement of science and to extend its reach outside University to popularise science.
S-Cubed has an executive of science students from different courses within the Faculty that work voluntarily throughout the year to organise activities that will enrich students’ experience on campus. Events are held regularly and range from weekend science seminars and site visits to parties and outdoor activities.
Additionally, S-Cubed publishes the magazine In Touch twice yearly with science related articles written by students and researchers. The full-colour magazine aims at communicating science through an informal language and provides the opportunity for students to share their experiences and interests.
Information Communication Technology Students' Association
History
The B. Sc. IT course at the University of Malta started off in 1992. In 1997, a group of enterprising students within the course took it upon themselves to start off an organization to represent the course and students, calling it ITSA - The Information Technology Students’ Association. The organization held out strongly for a few years, but then passed through a dormant period as interest diminished.
This changed radically in November 2002 when a group of 2nd and 3rd year students decided to take over ITSA and revamp it with fresh enthusiasm and new policies. It amended its statute, obtained funds through sponsorship, organized numerous activities and gained support and popularity, all the while standing ground for its members. ITSA also gained a good backing from department staff, garnering a relationship of mutual respect between all stakeholders in the organization.
Today
With the opening of the new Faculty of ICT in 2007, ITSA has rebranded itself as ICTSA, to reflect the setting up of the new faculty and the restructuring of the ICT courses offered by the Faculty. ICTSA today is currently run by a 7-member executive, as well as three sub-committee members who kindly offered to help out with the running of the association. ICTSA strives to represent all University students reading any degree in some way associated with information and communications technology. The good relationship that exists between the Faculty and ICTSA helps to bridge the gap between students and staff, and the association is often the first point of contact for students who have issues they wish to raise with the Faculty. While ICTSA is primarily oriented towards students seeking careers in ICT, its events are not simply restricted towards students of information technology. While computers were once seen as purely the realm of ‘geeks’, technology today penetrates of all our live, and ICTSA strives to organise events accessible to the University student body at large. Today more and more students from all backgrounds are choosing to study ICT, and ICTSA is proud to represent students from the fast-growing field. We encourage any prospective students interested in seeking information on the University’s ICT courses, as well as current students with any queries or suggestions, to feel free to contact us, and we will try help in any way we can.

Malta Health Students' Association
The MHSA is the student representative body for all students currently studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malta. Through educational, social and cultural events the MHSA is aimed at unifying students, while maintaining and promoting the diversity of courses offered within the faculty. Moreover we aim to interact with other student organisations for the wellbeing of all University students. The MHSA is based at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Mater Dei Hospital.
Malta Association of Dental Students
MADS is a senate-recognised association representing all the dental surgery students studying at the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the University of Malta. The MADS is based at the Medical School and operates within the Faculty of Dental Surgery. The MADS is managed by an Executive Committee elected at the beginning of every academic year at the Association’s Annual General Meeting. M.A.D.S., which is affiliated to the International Association of Dental Students (I.A.D.S.), promotes the study of dentistry in Malta through representing, protecting and furthering the interests of dental students. The association also promotes student exchanges, plays an active role in dental education and public health promotion and organises social, sporting, educational and cultural activities.
Malta Medical Students' Association
MMSA acts as a liaison between the students and the faculty. It also ensures that the students' education is up to par with international standards, and that the faculty does its best to produce well-trained and holistically professional doctors. MMSA also aims to disseminate information about improving one's health, raising awareness about health and human rights issues, as well as getting the student body involved in society.
Malta Pharmaceutical Students' Association
Malta University Sports Club
The Malta University Sports Club (MUSC) is one of the longest standing organisations in Malta, since 1925. The aim of the sports club includes the promotion of sport for all tertiary and college students, irrespective of cultural, gender, ethnic, religious or other differences. The MUSC is affiliated to FISU and EUSA internationally and with the National Youth Council (Malta).
There are a number of sports clubs affiliated to the MUSC. These include the Mdina Knights Football Club which currently plays in the Malta Football Association's third division and the Malta University Table Tennis Club.
The current administration of the MUSC is made up of Ms. Elena Bajada as President, Ms. Lara Camilleri as Secretary General and Mr. John Bonello as Director of Finance.
There are a number of annual events organized by the MUSC on a voluntary basis.
MUSC Sports Fest The Sports Fest is one the largest calendar events of the year in which most sports federations and clubs in Malta are invited to promote their sport/discipline on campus. The aim of this two/three-day long sports festival is to promote awareness among the student population and create a culture of sport on campus. The aim of the festival goes beyond mere competition.
MUSC-Euromilano The MUSC also participates in the European-wide Euromilano tournament, organized by Eurosportevents in collaboration with Universita Bocconi in Milano. Students have the opportunity to compete internationally in sports such as Futsal, Volleyball, Basketball, Tennis, and more.
MUSC Interfaculty Soccer Tournament Throughout the second term the MUSC organizes an interfaculty football/soccer tournament, 5-a-side. Matches are held on a weekly basis on university campus.
MUSC Aquatic and Fitness Centre Scheme The MUSC Aquatic and Fitness Centre Scheme is also administered by the MUSC. Following an initiative by Eman Pulis, the Minister for Education and Sport provided students with a reduced rate to make use of the pool and gym situated near university. The offer allows students to make use of the University Gym as well as the National Swimming pool at a heavily subsidized fees. Furthermore, the students are provided with quality personal training during opening hours.

University Engineering Students' Association
UESA stands for University Engineering Students Association and is a non-political student organisation which is directed towards students who are enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta. Since its birth, UESA’s main aim is to help the engineering student familiarise and accustom himself with university life, offering help and aid for his various needs and also providing him with both local and foreign working traineeships.
UESA’s objectives are achieved by building a good relationship with the staff at the faculty so as to serve as a bridge between the student and the lecturers, and by organising various activities such as parties, football tournaments and other events to spice up the engineering student’s life during his studies. UESA also organises conferences, where engineers are invited to give talks on different subjects to help the aspiring engineer get an insight in his future profession. UESA is also recognised by the Chamber of Engineers, by having its own active representative in the chamber’s executive.
In 2004, UESA was officially admitted in the EYE – European Young Engineers council, thus also representing the engineering student on an international level. Basically UESA is an organisation which does its utmost to be close to the student to aid him in his daily life at the university academically and compliment his studies with various activities spread throughout the year.

TSA was officially launched in January 2007 and it forms part of the FEMA faculty of the University Of Malta. Its main objective is to represent the students following the B.A/ B.A(Hons) Tourism Studies course. The need was felt to promote this course and make the local tourism industry aware that such a course exists and to create opportunities for its members. Each year of the course is represented by 1 or more students who form part of the official board of TSA. The association organizes a yearly conference together with other activities such as seminars, football tournaments etc...
