The village is known for the "Malexander murders" which occurred in 1999, when two Swedish police officers were killed by bank robbers.
Malexander murders
On the 28th of May, the "Östgöta Enskilda Bank" in Kisa was robbed by three masked and armed men: former mercenary Jackie Arklöv and the two neonazis Tony Olsson and Andreas Axelsson. The loot was approximately 2,6 million Swedish kronor.[2] While trying to stop the robbers, Swedish policemen Olle Borén (42 years) and Robert Karlström (30 years) were executed on a country road, with their own service pistols by shots to their necks.[3]
Andreas Axelsson was hurt during the gunfire, and he was arrested while seeking attention at a hospital. Tony Olsson managed to escape the country (probably with help from his fiancée). About a week later he was arrested in Costa Rica, and along with him about one million Swedish kronor from the loot was found.[2] Because of some bureaucratic fuss he wasn't sent to Sweden until a couple of weeks after his arrest.[4]
The third robber, Jackie Arklöv, was arrested in Stockholm three days after the robbery. Due to an attempt to escape the seizure, Arklöv was shot in the lung during the arrest. However, the injuries were not life-threatening.[5]
