Majid Khosrowshahi

Majid Khosrowshahi

Majid Khosrowshahi was born on January 5, 1919 into a large family in the city of Tabriz in the Iranian Azerbaijan, a year after the end of the First World War. His father Hassan Khosrowshahi was educated in traditional religious studies and had attained the high status of a Shiite jurisconsult, but had instead chosen business as his profession. His father's business was primarily importing goods from Western countries and later manufacturing textiles and other ventures.

Majid's school years coincided with the reign of Reza Shah, the first monarch of the Pahlavi dynasty, when a process of modernization was underway in Iran. Majid did not quite finish high school, in part because he was wanted at the family business, which was primarily importing goods at the time. Thus began his distinguished career as a businessman and later an entrepreneur, where together with his five brothers they built one of the largest and most successful modern enterprises in Iran.

As such, Majid was among a handful of leading Iranian industrialists and businessmen who were largely credited for expanding the country's industrial base and contributing to the creation of a middle-class in Iran.

The Iranian Revolution of 1979 ended Majid's active involvement in business activities, when he and many others emigrated from Iran. He lived the rest of his life in the US in semi-retirement. Majid Khosrowshahi died on March 1, 2010, survived by 5 children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
