Madurai Ramaswamy Sundar (born November 5, 1959) is a noted Carnatic musician.

Early life

Madurai Ramaswamy Sundar was born in Pathamadai, Tamil Nadu. He first learnt under his aunt Smt. Ananthalakshmi Sadagopan a reputed concert musician, and later under Sri. T.N.Seshagopalan. He was born into a family where Carnatic music, in some form and degree, was part of day-to-day life. While his grand parents and parents were knowledgeable listeners-connoisseurs of Carnatic music, he had in his aunt Smt. Ananthalakshmi Sadagopan a reputed concert musician, who had had her training under stalwarts like Sathur A.G. Subramania Iyer and Semmangudi Sriinivasa Iyer. All these set the tone for what was to become an integral part of his life.

Professional/Personal life

He holds bachelors degree in engineering from Indian Institute of Technology and did his MBA from Indian Institute of Management. After his MBA, he branched off into information technology as his mainstay. He holds an MSA degree in Information Resources Management. He got married to Padma in Aug 1985. They have been residents of USA since 1989 and they have a son Sai Karthik (b 1998) who is a student of the Mridangam Maestro Dr.Trichy Sankaran

He pursues a dual career - of IT Manager and musician-cum-teacher. He and his wife run a school by the name Trinity Academy of Fine Arts and offer one-on-one lessons in vocal music.

Music career

Madurai R Sundar was initiated at a very early age into Carnatic music by his aunt Mrs. Ananthalakshmi Sadagopan, herself a musician of repute. Later Sundar came under the tutelage of the musical legend Sangeetha Kalanidhi Madurai T.N.Seshagopalan in 1972 and made his debut in 1974. Sundar’s resonant voice and aesthetic delivery have attracted discerning audience world over. He is a musician whose raga swaroopa answers to his dictates. Sri Sundar has an intuitive gift to use his voice unerringly for musical excellence that gives him a perennial inspiration. He has the distinct ability to inspire his audience by infusing feelings into every verse he sings. His rendering is known for its Akshara Suddha or perfection of syllables. He is an " A" Grade artiste in Prasar Bharathi (All India Radio).

  • He was conferred the title Sangeetha Rathna by Dubai Tamil Family in 2007.
