At Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) on 7 December 1983 during take-off in poor visibility, Iberia Boeing 727 EC-CFJ, operating Iberia Flight 350 (outbound for Rome-Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO/LIRF)),[1] struck Aviaco DC9 EC-CGS, operating Aviaco Flight 134 (outbound for Santander Airport (SDR/LEXJ)),[2] on the runway, causing the death of one crew member and 50 passengers on the Boeing 727 and all 42 persons on board the DC-9.[2] Among those killed in the DC-9 was Fanny Cano, a famous Mexican actress.
Investigation
Investigators found out that the Boeing 727 and DC-9 had collided due to the poor visibility at the airport, as well as inadequate signs and markings, which lead to the DC-9 enterring the runway without clearance as the Boeing 727 was taking off.[1]
