Dr. Jerry A. Shields (1935–1998) was an author known for his books on Delaware and infamous witch Patty Cannon, and the one time richest man in the world Daniel Ludwig.[who?]
A book on Delaware's George Alfred Townsend also brought him considerable prominence from students of the Civil War. His multiple interests and passions included the environment and fought many battles in the Delaware State Senate against corporate interests. He pioneered Delaware's Coastal Zone Act to protect delicate wilderness areas from exploitation, received Delaware's No.1 Environmentalists Award[citation needed] and started first recycling center in the city of Dover, Delaware.[citation needed] He was considered a champion of the poor and worked tirelessly in their defense against political interests.[who?]
