- Duncan Evans
-
Duncan Evans (born c. 1959[1]) was a Welsh amateur golfer who won The Amateur Championship at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in 1980. Evans was the first Welshman to have won the event and that year his achievement was recognised when he was made BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year.
Golfing career
In 1980, Evans became the first person from Wales to win the Amateur Championship, which was played in heavy rain at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.[2] He also represented the Britain and Ireland team in the Walker Cup,[1] playing in the 1981 tournament at Cypress Point Club in California.[3] He played in three rounds and his results were: won one, lost one and halved one.[3] He played in two Open Championships, the 1980 at Muirfield and the 1981 at Royal St George's. Evans finished 115th in 1980 failing to meet the cut after the second round,[4] but recorded a better result in 1981 when he came joint 67th, missing the third round cut.[5]
Personal history
In 2009, Evans was imprisoned for four years for his involvement in a £3.5 million Value Added Tax scam.[1]
