The school has been separate from Duke University since 1983[2], but a strong academic influence is still evident in the school's research-driven teaching practices and curriculum. Faculty at the school also routinely present papers at national professional conferences and contemporary leaders in education theory visit the school to work with its staff. The school describes its approach as a "project-based, child-centered, hands-on model." The school's mission is "to help children become confident, independent learners who solve real-life problems, work cooperatively with others, and develop their personal talents, characters and ambitions."
In the fall of 2008, the school moved to its lower campus, currently still located on Duke University grounds, into the buildings and where the middle school was located. Additional buildings were built next to the former middle school campus for the middle school to be located at 3716 Old Erwin Rd, Durham NC, 27705.
