As an all-rounder, his first-class cricket career spanned from 1899 to 1921. As an opening batsman, he holds the record of being the first Indian to score a double century in first-class cricket. He was a member of the Indian team that toured England in 1911, under the captaincy of the Maharaja of Patiala.
He captained Parsees, and after retirement, continued his association with the game in the capacity of the President of Mumbai Cricket Association from the 1930-31 to 1934-35 seasons.
He was the Vice-President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 1936 to 1945.
He was also the Chairman of the All India Selection Committee from 1932-33 to 1939-40.
A committee was formed under the Chairmanship of Justice S R Tendulkar in 1948, which suggested that an inter-club tournament be started in the city of Mumbai, to perpetuate his memory. And with great pride, we can say that Dr H D Kanga Cricket League Tournament, which commenced in 1948, is being played on various grounds of the city of Mumbai without a break since then.
