Dr. Doug Hirschhorn (born 1972; Miami, Florida) is an American trading psychology coach. He is a frequent contributor to CNBC, an author and a consultant to financial institutions and hedge funds.
Biography
Doug Hirschhorn was born and raised in Miami, Florida. He received his B.A. from Colgate University in 1994, and went on to earn an M.S. in Exercise Science in 2000 from Southern Connecticut State University. In 2005, he received his Ph.D. in Psychology (with an emphasis in sport psychology) from Capella University. He is currently the chief executive officer of Edge Consulting, a firm specializing in trader psychology coaching.
A former athlete and floor trader, Hirschhorn's path to trading psychology was not a direct one. As the catcher and captain of his Division I college baseball team, he intended to pursue a coaching career in professional sports. After a detour spent on the trading floors in Chicago, Hirschhorn went back to school to earn the advanced degrees necessary to become a baseball coach. It was in a masters degree program in sports psychology, that he experienced his ‘aha!’ moment: If the psychological principles he was learning could be applied to athletes, why not try them out on traders– a similarly competitive breed? As a trading psychology coach, he has conducted over 500 workshops at financial institutions, hedge funds and banks across the world.
Hirschhorn is the author of two books, 8 Ways to Great: Peak Performance on the Job and In Your Life (2010) and The Trading Athlete: Winning the Mental Game of Online Trading (2001). His new book The Trading Psychology Handbook: The 19 Truths about Great Traders will be released in 2012. Dr. Hirschhorn is a regular blogger for Forbes.com and, for years, he was a featured columnist for Trader Monthly. He is also regularly featured in the media speaking about issues relating to trader behavior and psychology. His credits include: NBC Today show, CNN, CNBC’s The Call, Street Signs, Power Lunch, Squawk on the Street, Fast Money; On the Money; Bloomberg; VH1 – The Fabulous Life of Billion Dollar Wall Street Ballers; Fidelity; Stocks Futures Options Magazine; Institutional Investor; The Trader's Journal, Alternative Investment News. He is also the host of a regular CNBC video blog “Trader Psychology with Dr. Doug.”
