His most famous role was as the ineffectual Governor Venables in the popular sitcom Porridge alongside Ronnie Barker and Fulton Mackay.
He also appeared on the TV programmes Z-Cars, The Avengers, Private Schulz, Adam Adamant Lives!, and in the Doctor Who story The Seeds of Doom, as Sir Colin Thackeray.
He died of a heart attack on 5 June 1988, aged 63 and is buried in the East London Cemetery and Crematorium.
He was married to actress Barbara New until his death.
