Dominic J. Marino, DVM is an American veterinary surgeon and a pioneer in canine chiari – like malformation and syringomyelia.[1] He currently serves as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of Staff of Long Island Veterinary Specialists, an internationally recognized veterinary specialty center with a staff of over 180.[2] He is the founding director of the Canine Chiari Institute at Long Island Veterinary Specialists and founding board member of the New York Veterinary Foundation.[3]
Biography
Dominic J. Marino developed his love of animals at an early age. As an elementary school student, Marino wrote a letter to his town requesting an animal crossing to prevent squirrels and other small animals from getting hit by cars. He also led a candle light ceremony with his fellow students to remember a deceased neighborhood cat. His father, a pediatrician, influenced his interest in medicine. However, his passion was for a different kind of patient.[4]
He received his Bachelor of Science Degree and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree at Auburn University in 1989.[5] He completed a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Georgia in 1989.[6] Marino also completed a three-year comprehensive residency in small animal orthopedic, soft tissue and neurosurgery at the Animal Medical Center in New York City.[7] During his residency at the Animal Medical Center (1993) he was credited with the Martin and Beatrice Weiser Outstanding Research Award and the North Shore Animal League Petering Scholarship Award.[8] In addition, Marino is one of few certified canine rehabilitation practitioners. On September 11, Marino and a crew of trained professionals from Long Island Veterinary specialists were among the first groups to care for the dogs involved in the search-and-rescue operations. Due to his efforts, Marino was named Alumnus of the Year by Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine.[9]
Marino is also board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons is the former head of the Orthopedic/Neurosurgery department at the Animal Medical Center in New York City.[10] Marino serves as a surgical consultant to The Humane Society of New York, Nassau University Medical Center, North Shore Animal League America, Bide-A-Wee Animal Adoption Center, The Guide Dog Foundation,[11] Sweet Briar Nature Preserve[12] and is an executive board member of the Police Surgeons Benevolent Association, NY.[13]
Veterinary Pioneering
Dominic Marino is a pioneer in the field of Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia in dogs.[14] He founded the Canine Chiari Institute[15] - which seeks to find treatments to alleviate the suffering of dogs afflicted with canine Chiari - like malformation and Syringomyelia, a debilitating and painful neurological disease which affects mostly small dogs in the spinal cord. Exterior fluid from the brain flows into the interior of the spinal cord building up in the syrinx, causing catostrophic damage to the spinal cord.[16] He specializes in providing corrective surgery for Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia. His procedure, Foreamen Magnum Decompression(FMD) has an 80% success rate.[17] Marino also has been a pioneer in micro and nano hip replacement surgery in pets.[18] He has also helped develop the use of thermography as a diagnostic screening modality as well as electronic brachytherapy for targeted cancer treatment in animals.[19]
