She was built in Lübeck, Germany in 1968 and was renovated in 1995 and then updated in 2000. She previously was named Scandinavian Sun for day cruise operator Sea Escape.
The MV Discovery Sun provides daily service (except Wednesdays) from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama Island and acts as a passenger cruise ferry service for both Bahamians and tourists. The MV Discovery Sun has provided consistent service to Grand Bahama, while also assisting with hurricane relief to the island.
Facilities on board the Discovery Sun include two dining rooms, four lounges, 1 casino, live bands/calypso/disco, video arcade, swimming pool, sun decks, live entertainment & shows, jackpot bingo, duty-free gift shops, kids' club and cabins.
Discovery Cruise Line offers 1 Day Bahamas Cruises, Cruise and Stay Family Vacations and Transportation only options.
Ship Itinerary (Sails everyday except for Wednesday)
- Departs Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) 9:30 am
- Arrives at Freeport, the Bahamas 1:30 pm
- Departs Freeport, the Bahamas at 5:15 pm
- Arrives Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) 10:30pm.
Discovery Cruise Lines Shutdown and sale of Discovery Sun
It was announced that Discovery Cruise Lines will cease operations on Sept 6, 2011.[1]. The MV Discovery Sun is currently for sale.
