Post productionHeadquarters Detroit, Michigan Employees 400 Website None Detroit Center Studios was a proposed $86 million film studio to be located in downtown Detroit, Michigan that could create computer animation and visual effects in partnership with Wonderstruck Studios and the Los Angeles based firm of SMH Partners which originally planned to debut at the 75,000 sq ft (7,000 m2). building used by MGM Grand for its temporary casino.[1] The new location and status of the project were placed on hold in October 2009 due to the late 2000s recession.
The studio expects that it would employ over 400 people,[1] as part of a film industry expected to employ over 4,000 people in Metro Detroit.[2][3] Michigan officials consider the studio to be significant, since it helps establish the state as a legitimate contender in the 12-month-a-year film business.[4]
On July 6, 2010 plans for building the studio fell through and MGM Resorts International (Then still known as MGM MIRAGE) sold the property to the City of Detroit who announced that they will move the Police Department headquarters from 1300 Beaubean and the Fire Department headquarters from 250 West Larned to the former MGM Grand property at 1300 John C. Lodge Freeway.[5][6] The Michigan State Police were also expect to build and maintain a modern crime lab in the same building but those plans were scrapped in favor of a smaller training facility and ballistics testing lab instead.[7]
