Harry Bartow Hawes (
November 15 ,1869 -July 31 ,1947 ) was an Americanpolitician who served as a Democratic member of the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate fromMissouri .Born in
Covington, Kentucky , Hawes moved toSt. Louis, Missouri , where he graduated fromWashington University School of Law in 1896, and began his career in law. He represented theRepublic of Hawaii when it was annexed to the US. He later served as president of the St. Louis Police Board.Hawes entered the
Missouri House of Representatives in 1916, but left to serve inWorld War I . In the election of 1920, Hawes was elected to the US House, where he served until resigning onOctober 15 ,1926 . The following month he was elected to the Senate. Because SenatorSelden P. Spencer had died, Hawes took his senate seat three months early,December 6 ,1926 . He resigned onFebruary 3 ,1933 , to focus onwildlife conservation and law.Hawes died in
