Playing career
Tomkinson joined Port Vale as an amateur in 1949, he didn't play a game and instead departed for Burton Albion in 1951. He returned to Vale in December 1952 to sign as a professional and made his debut on Boxing Day 1951 in a 4–1 win at Crewe Alexandra. He played during some of the Vale's best years as he played in the semi-final of the FA Cup and helped the team lift the Third Division (North) title in 1953–54. The 2–1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on 27 March 1954 was his only cup appearance for the club and with a mere 29 league games to his name he moved on to Cheshire side Crewe Alex.[1]
