Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) of Jahangirnagar University is one of the newly established disciplines with high potential future.[1] The department started its academic activities with a handful number of dynamic and energetic faculties and undergraduate students on 8 April 2000 in response to the up-warding national demand for professionals for spatial planning and development.
Departing from the traditional approach, the department places emphasis on the contemporary recognized approaches to professional development through reflective practice; work based learning projects maintaining high academic standards.

The Field of Planning
The profession of Urban and Regional Planning has grown to encompass all aspect of the systematic development of human settlements, including the use of land, protection of the environment, economic productivity and the future allocating of physical and social public resources.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning stimulates and enables practicing planners, aspiring planners, decision makers, and interested public to understand urban and regional systems, public decision making, institutions of planning, and activities of planners; develops and critically examines theories and methods useful to understanding urban and regional systems, public decision making, institutions of planning and activities of professional planners; and utilizes and applies these theories and methods to issues of importance to communities and professionals.
Planning can play a vital role in some specialized fields such as:
-Land use Planning and Management
-Adoption of policies, programs and plans for solving people’s problem
-Civic and Utilities services Planning and Management
-Environmental Planning and Management
-Transportation and Infrastructure planning and Management
-Rural Planning and Development
-Disaster management planning
-Project Planning and Management
-GIS and Romote Sensing
While any single profession may focus on narrower range of issues, the field of planning as a whole focuses on the entire gamut of issues affecting the human settlements, the environment and sustainable development.
At each academic year the department admits on an average 35 students in the undergraduate program (BURP). At present the department is offering four-year undergraduate program naming BURP (Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning)and one-year graduate program naming MURP (Masters in Urban and Regional Planning).
