The Sri Lanka Coast Guard, officially the Department of Coast Guard, is a Sri Lankan non-ministerial government department tasked with Coast guard duties within the territorial waters of Sri Lanka. It comes under the purview of the Ministry of Defence and be staffed by civilian personal.[1] It is headed by Director General of Sri Lanka Coast Guard .
Prior to 2009 it was the Coast Guard Unit attached to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, responsible for fishy and natural resource protection coastal areas. The current department of coast guard was created under the Department of Coast Guard Bill presented to parliament in 2009.
Responsibilities
- law enforcement within the country's exclusive economic zone
- search and rescue
- assist the customs in conducting anti-smuggling and anti-immigration operations
- suppression of terrorist activities in territorial waters of Sri Lanka
