Dennis C Hammond is an American plastic surgeon based in Grand Rapids, Michigan and assistant professor of surgery at Michigan State University. Hammond is known for his advancements in breast improvement surgery through the use of his innovative SPAIR (short scar periareolar inferior pedicle reduction) technique.[1]
In Hammond's technique, tissue is removed from around the nipple and areola in a semicircular fashion, and the breast is reshaped based on its natural curve. The resulting scar passes around the nipple and areola, and continues down the lower centerline of the breast — directly beneath the areola. The SPAIR technique is intended to eliminate the wide, hypertrophic scarring on the underside of the breast found with conventional breast reduction surgery, and protects the roundness of the breast.[2]
Hammond has been in private practice at The Center for Breast and Body Contouring in Grand Rapids.[3]
Education
Hammond graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1985 and began his internship and residency in general surgery for Blodgett Memorial Medical Center and St. Mary's Health Services until 1988. From 1988 to 1990, he was a resident in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Grand Rapids Area Medical Education Consortium. Following this, Hammond went on to complete his fellowship in aesthetic and reconstructive breast and cosmetic surgery, under G. Patrick Maxwell, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville in 1991, and his fellowship in hand and microsurgery at The Medical College of Wisconsin in 1992.[4] Since then, he has been practicing in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1994, Hammond was certified as a plastic surgeon by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.[5][6]
