Distinguished Service CrossAdmiral Sir Denis William Boyd KCB CBE DSC (1891–1965) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Fifth Sea Lord.
Boyd joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1906 and served in World War I before being attached to the Australian Navy between 1926 and 1928.[1] He appointed Captain of the Destroyer Flotilla based at Malta during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.[1]
He also served in World War II commanding the Torpedo school HMS Vernon and then commanding the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious at the Battle of Taranto in 1940.[1] He commanded the Aircraft Carriers in the Mediterranean Fleet in 1941 and then commanded HMS Indomitable in the Eastern Fleet in 1942.[1] He was appointed Fifth Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Air Equipment in 1943.[1]
After the war he became Admiral (Air) and then, from 1946, Commander-in-Chief of the British Pacific Fleet;[2][3] he retired in 1949.[1]
In retirement he became Principal of Ashridge College.[4]
