Deadly, Unna?


Deadly, Unna? is a work of teenage fiction and is Phillip Gwynne's first novel.[1] The book deals with the inter-racial friendship between two teenage boys, Gary "Blacky" Black and "Dumby" Red.

Gwynne won the "Book of the Year Award: Older Readers" prize in the 1999 Children's Book Council of Australia awards.[2] It was first reviewed in Viewpoint: On Books for Young Adults, Volume 6 (Volume 2) 1998. A movie adaptation, Australian Rules was released in 2002.

Plot

Gary ‘Blacky’ Black (the main character) who is 14 years old, lives in Port and his family moves to South Australia when lots of trouble arises in the town he living in. He joins a local football team and he has been appointed to first ruck just as the grand finals come up, but he has a opponent, the "Thumper", who Blacky must protect himself from.

While Blacky is playing football, he becomes friends with a team member, Dumby Red, who is an Aborigine, one of the Nungas. The summer also brings the death of Dumby. Blacky goes against his father's will and attends Dumby's funeral.

The setting

The setting in the Peninsula, South Australia. In this novel, the whites, or Goonyas, live in "The Port", while the Nungas, the Aborigines, live in "The Point".

Movie

The movie Australian Rules is based on this novel.[3]
