Born in Lanarkshire, he migrated as a child to Australia, where he received a primary education. He became a miner in Newcastle and President of the Northern District Miners' Union. In 1914, he was elected to the Australian Senate as a Labor Senator from New South Wales. He held the seat until his defeat in 1917. Watson died in 1924.[1]
