On 13 January 2005 the UN announced that Veness was to become to become the first Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Safety and Security.[2] He left the Met later in 2005, succeeded in his role by Andy Hayman. Veness resigned his UN post in June 2008 after an internal investigation into a terrorist attack on Algiers in which his department was heavily criticised.[1]
