Musical career

Helpling is a self-taught musician, whose debut release, Between Green and Blue, was a finalist for the 1997 INDIE Album-Of-The-Year award. In 1999, Helpling released his second album, Sleeping on the Edge of the World.[1][2] Among other musical influences such as U2 and Bjork, one of Helpling's main inspirations is film music. Elliot Goldenthal, Edward Shearmur and David Julyan are among his favorites.

Film composition

Helpling is also a composer for film, and has also provided several themes, scores and ambient beds for numerous television, corporate and interactive projects. His production company is named DHM Music Design. With a four-year gap in album releases, Helpling is now[when?] in the studio on his third release, Spotted Peccary.

As a full-time composer, Helpling has written music for several films, one of which, Trade Offs, immersed him in the music of India. The score features several guest artists including vocalist Nidhi Bhatmuley.[1][2]

Collaboration

After several years of producing music for film, Helpling worked side by side with fellow artist Jon Jenkins on the album Treasure. Six years after its inception, this album was released on June 12, 2007. Previous solo releases by both artists have charted at #1 on NAV/NAR Top 100 charts, and been designated as a Billboard Magazine Critic's Choice.[citation needed] Helpling and Jenkins embarked on creating a sequel to the Treasure album, entitled The Crossing, which was in production for two years and was released in 2010.

Deep Exile

As a way to communicate with listeners and followers of the Treasure collaboration, Helpling and Jenkins created Deep Exile, a website serving as a home for the music of both artists. The site hosts the Deep Exile Podcast, where the artists check in and discuss their work in the studio.
