David F. Tolin

David F. Tolin, Ph.D., is an American clinical psychologist.[1]

History

Dr. Tolin was born in Washington State and attended the University of Washington.[2] He later received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Arkansas. He is board certified in clinical psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology.[3] In 2000 Dr. Tolin founded the Anxiety Disorders Center at the Institute of Living, where he continues to serve as Director.[4] He is also Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine.[5]

Academic Contributions

Dr. Tolin is an expert on cognitive behavioral therapy. He has published more than 100 scientific journal articles related to anxiety disorders, cognitive behavioral therapy, and related topics.[6] He serves as a principal investigator for the National Institutes of Health,[7] and has been a member of their scientific review committees. Dr. Tolin is a leading expert in the area of hoarding disorder (also known as compulsive hoarding).[8] He has been an outspoken advocate against the use of torture by psychologists in the war on terror.[9]

Dr. Tolin has published three books: Face Your Fears: A Proven Plan to Beat Anxiety, Panic, Phobias, and Obsessions,[10] Buried in Treasures: Help for Compulsive Acquiring, Saving, and Hoarding,[11] and Treating Trichotillomania: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Hairpulling and Related Problems.[12]

Popular Media

Dr. Tolin was the host of the 2010 VH1 television series The OCD Project.[13] Previously, he was the original psychologist on the A&E series Hoarders.[14] Dr. Tolin has also made numerous appearances on programs such as The Oprah Winfrey Show[15][16][17] and The Dr. Oz Show.[18][19]
