Education, licensing, and early career

David F. Simons is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (B.A. Psychology, 1973). In 1977 he obtained his J.D. from Harvard Law School.

He was admitted to the Hawaii State bar in 1978 and began practicing law in Hawaii as a volunteer working with Phil Lowenthal in the Public Defender’s office. He then went into private practice as an associate with John Edmunds, Esq. in Honolulu.

Career

In 1984 he started his own law firm which expanded and he eventually hired several associates. Today he is a sole practitioner with an office in downtown Honolulu. Mr. Simons' practice focuses on representing employees and their rights in the work place.

For example, Mr. Simons has represented females who have been discriminated against in the workplace because of their gender and taken their cases to trial and gotten jury verdicts of over $1 million dollars. He has also represented clients who have been discriminated against because of their disabilities and won.[3] [4] Another example is that Mr. Simons was one of the attorneys on the “Dream Team” recruited to assist former University of Hawaii president, Evan Dobelle when his employment was terminated by the State Board of Regents.[5]

Mr. Simons has also written articles pertaining to the employment law field, including the article “Employment Law That Fits Our State – The Unique Features And Interpretation Of Hawaii’s Fair Employment Practices Act” featured in the Hawaii Bar Journal in March 2005.[6]

Mr. Simons' knowledge of Hawaii employment law is well known and widely recognized.[7] He has been listed in the book Best Lawyers of America[8] for the past 12 years and has been ranked as one of the best lawyers in Honolulu by Honolulu Magazine for the past three years.[9] [10]

In 2009, he was selected as the Best Employment Attorney in Honolulu by BestLawyers.com.[11]
