Kinallen (derived from Irish Gaelic: "Ceann Álainn " meaning 'beautiful head or hill') is a small village in County Down, Northern Ireland, sitting four miles from Dromore and only two miles from Dromara. It lies in the north-eastern corner of the Banbridge District Council area. The village surrounds a crossroads, where the Banbridge-Dromara and Lisburn-Katesbridge roads meet. There is little in the way of amenities, with one sole shop and filling station.In recent years, the village has seen substantial development, from only 300 residents in 1991 to 557 residents in 2001. This is due to attractive property prices in the rural zones of Belfast's commuter belt, aided by Kinallen's desirable position in the countryside and its proximity to both the A1 dual-carriageway and the M1 motorway.

The local secondary school students often attend Friends' School or Wallace High in Lisburn, Banbridge Academy or Dromore High School. With the provision of a direct bus (Translink-Ulsterbus service 26), a few choose schools in Belfast, such as the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Methodist College.

Transport and Communications

The village's recent popularity as a place to live has turned the area into a dormitory settlement for both Belfast and Lisburn. Despite the growth in population, and the resulting increase in traffic, there has been little done to improve the area's infrastructure. The roads leading from the A1 Belfast-Dublin dual-carriageway are of low quality. The 'Kinallen Road' section of the route, itself unclassified, is particularly narrow in places and presents the traffic with dangerous bends and junctions.

The village is linked by Translink "Ulsterbus" bus service 26, which runs between Dromara village and the Europa Bus Centre in Belfast through Kinallen, Annahilt and Lisburn. The week-day frequency provides a bus each hour.

Kinallen's official telephone dialling code, like the rest of Northern Ireland is 028. Kinallen lies within the Dromara telephone exchange area, meaning local numbers commence with 9753xxxx. Until the 2000 Big Number Change, the village constituted part of the 01238 area code (Saintfield/Ballynahinch/Dromara). Like elsewhere in the former 01238 area (now 028 97...) is still normal to hear local numbers quoted in the old 6-digit format (53xxxx).
