- Daura-Suruwal
-
Daura-Suruwal, or Daura Suruwal, is a national costume of Nepal, which is worn by males.[1] It is also worn by the people of neighboring Sikkim and Darjeeling. The equivalent female national costume is the Gunyou Cholo.
History
The outfit's history dates back at least 600 years. The Nepalese Prime Minister Bir Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana wore the Daura-Suruwal on an unofficial visit to the United Kingdom in the 19th century, which popularized it further in Nepal. In 2017 B.S., (1960), the Daura-Suruwal was designated the national uniform for men in government positions. The use of the outfit as a government uniform or as a popular form of clothing has declined since that time, but also has increased use among Nepali nationalists in the Darjeeling province of India.[2][3][4]
