Metaswitch Networks (commonly Metaswitch) is the trading name of Data Connection Ltd and Data Connection Corp,[9] a private UK-based company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets telecommunications hardware and software solutions to communication service providers, equipment manufacturers and large enterprises.

Corporate history

The company was founded as Data Connection Ltd (DCL) in 1981 by seven former IBM employees led by Ian Ferguson, who remains on the board of directors.[2][3][6] The company's earliest business areas included IBM Systems Network Architecture (SNA) and retail point of sale systems. In 1987, the founders established the Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) to hold the shares of the company on behalf of the employees, which enabled company-wide profit sharing.[10][11]

The company launched its carrier systems business under the Metaswitch brand in 2000,[2] and by 2008 that division was responsible for 78% of the company’s revenue.[12] In January 2008 Francisco Partners, a private equity firm, and Sequoia Capital, a venture capitalist firm, invested an undisclosed sum in Data Connection.[13][14] In April 2009 the company announced intentions to consolidate all of its products and business operations under the Metaswitch brand, with two business units: the Carrier Systems Division and Network Protocol Division.[15] This rebrand was completed by 7 October 2009.[16]

In March 2010, Metaswitch Networks announced that it was acquiring AppTrigger Inc, a telecommunications company that provides Service Broker solutions.[17] It announced acquisition of Colibria AS, a Norwegian provider of Rich Communications Suite (RCS) software, in April 2011.[18]
