Dancing with the Drag Stars
Dancing with the Drag Stars, (DWTDS), is an annual competition held in San Francisco, with all proceeds benefiting The Richmond-Ermet AIDS Foundation which provides funding to Bay Area HIV/AIDS agencies through the production of Broadway style stage productions via the donated talent of stars of stage and screen. "Dancing with the DragStars" is significant as it is the first nationally recognized ballroom dance event to break the boundaries imposed by not just society but the NDCA (National Dance Council of America) which prohibits same-sex dance competition within the mainstream by providing a medium for drag professionals to legitimately learn and compete withing the medium of partner dance. This was most significantly acknowledged at the inauguration of season 1 of "Dancing with the DragStars" at Cheryl Burke Dance ballroom studio in San Francisco when then San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom presented the production with a certificate of recognition for breaking barriers and furthering the cause of promoting a positive image for the LGBT community as a whole.
The event has been hosted since season 1 by San Francisco icon Donna Sachet and Patrik Gallineaux, who is also the producer and co-creator of the show. The annual production attracts a rotating roster of celebrity judges, and launched its first event with Bruce Vilanch, Steve Wozniak, Cheryl Burke, and Bebe Sweetbriar.
The event casts a variety of well known Drag Stars primarily based in San Francisco, CA but also casts stars throughout the United States. The stars are paired with professional ballroom dancers to compete for a tiara disco ball trophy, and title as season champions of Dancing with the Drag Stars. Each couple performs a ballroom dance routine to compete for points scored by the guest judges. Audience votes come into play in the event of a tie. In Season 1, the show was a three time event consisting of two semi-final rounds, and a final. The top 2 couples in each semi round moved on to finale night. Season 2 was a one night event with the top scoring couple announced as the winners. Dancing with the Stars professional Cheryl Burke, sponsored the event for seasons 1 and 2.
The show first premiered on June 9th, 2009 at the Cheryl Burke Dance Ballroom Studio in San Francisco. Season 2 took place on June 20th, 2010 also at the Cheryl Burke Dance studio. Season 3 begins on November 13th, 2011 at a new location, Ruby Skye.
