John III Rizocopo

John III Rizocopo

John III Rizocopo (also called Joannes Rizocopus) was an Exarch of Ravenna (710).

Shortly before Pope Constantine departed for Constantinople, he met John in Rome. Shortly afterwards John was murdered. The people of Ravenna made a certain Giorgius their leader; he soon gained the loyalty of Cervia, Forlì, Forlimpopoli, and other cities. The rebellion was eventually suppressed, but it destroyed much of the effective authority of the exarchate, which was only of secondary importance until it was finally overrun in 752.
