He was born in Worcester, South Africa, and attended Lanner House School there before emigrating from South Africa. He currently plays for the Glasgow Warriors in the RaboDirect Pro12.
Van der Merwe joined Scottish side Glasgow after the 2009 Churchill Cup.
He is a Canada international. He played four games at the 2007 Rugby World Cup, scoring a try in the 12–12 draw with Japan. He also represented his country at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.[1]
