The league's head coaches determine the award by voting and it is usually presented to the honoree during the NBADL's playoffs.[1] The award "honors the player who demonstrated the most significant improvement on the court throughout the course of the season."[1]
The inaugural winner was Mildon Ambres, a 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m) guard[2] for the Idaho Stampede who increased nearly every positive statistical category from the year before.[3] His single season increased per-game averages included: 8.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists as well as 26 more games started.[3]
The most recent winner is Dar Tucker, also a guard, who played for the New Mexico Thunderbirds in 2010–11.[1]
