Craig B. Johnson is the current mayor of Elk Grove Village, Illinois. He was elected in April, 1997 and is a lifetime resident of the Northwestern Chicago suburb. He is most well known for his political battle with the city of Chicago's mayor, Richard M. Daley, over the expansion of O'Hare International Airport. A project said to have been poised to destroy a sizable portion of the village's industrial park until resistance from Johnson and other O'Hare-area mayors forced compromise between Chicago and Elk Grove Village.[1] Johnson also made Elk Grove Village one of the first towns in Illinois to enact a public smoking ban.[citation needed]
A scandal erupted when Mayor Johnson's son, who may have been drunk at the time, drove into three parked cars after 2:00 AM June 18th and left the scene of the accident. The mayor assured the public his son would "own up for his actions" and blamed the incident on faulty brakes. His son claimed the problem was with the "accelerator"[2][3][4]
Mayor Johnson was injured, breaking his collarbone on June 29, 2010 while cycling in preparation for the "Mayor's Challenge" a part of the Alexian Brothers International Tour of Elk Grove [5][6]
