Cowen Hamilton Secondary School

Cowen Hamilton Secondary School is a school in South Trinidad.

History

Cowen Hamilton Secondary School, pronounced (Co-win Hamilton) was founded January 16th 1962 out of a desire to advance the education and socio-economic position of the fifth company village(located within the vicinity of Princes Town and Moruga Trinidad )

The strident carry for education beyond the primary level led a group of 7 visionaries to formulate and execute the plan to establish a secondary school. The group comprised members of Baptist Faith , F.W. Webb, K. Charles,T. Ayers and Reverends; Chapman,Parkes, Bell & Payne. This dream came a reality on Monday 16 January 1962 when Trinidad and Tobago's only baptist secondary school was born. The school was named after two pioneers in secular and religious education namely George Cowen and William Hamilton. George Cowen was a British missionary and educator also he established several missions in Princes Town. William Hamilton was a local baptist pastor who led the fifth company Baptist church. In 1966 Cowen Hamilton Secondary School rose to the status of being a government assisted secondary school. This, together with the assistance of corporate grants received from British Petroleum , National Petroleum and contributions received from benefactors such as Mr Sookdeo Ramroop, resulted in the school expanding rapidly. The two following decades saw significant growth in terms of school population, also self recognition and also staff upgrade. Evident of this is the Bell Multipurpose Hall which was erected in 1989. This therefore made provisions for administrative offices, improved library facilities, computer science room, an audio visual arts room and also a very spacious assembly area. With view to future development, the Kern Bungalow was demolished to make way for a new structure. The initial curriculum includes mainly subjects in the Arts , however it now caters to modern societal needs with subjects in Physical Sciences and Technical Vocation studies. The advance studies (currently CAPE) commenced in the year 1979.

Cowen Hamilton Secondary School has a history in participating in many competitions some to name, Young Leaders, Public Speaking, Drama Festival and also performances in Parang and Music Festival. The school's projection is for further physical, functional and personnel upgrades to strengthen the component of the curriculum as we seek to answer the professional and technological demands of our changing environment
