College career

Freshman year

Lewis was named to the College Football News Freshman All-America second-team after an outstanding first season of action for the Aggies. Lewis, a redshirt freshman from Houston Madison High School, finished 2003 with 1,024 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns on 186 carries. Lewis became the first Aggie rusher to surpass the 1,000-yard mark since 1998 when NFL standout Dante Hall did so while helping the Aggies to the Big 12 Championship. Lewis joined Greg Hill as the only A&M freshmen to rush for more than 1,000 yards in school history. In addition, Lewis' 12 rushing touchdowns matched the A&M freshman record set by Hill in 1992.

Lewis' 1,024 yards were the sixth-most in the Big 12 Conference in 2003, and Lewis was the conference's leading freshman rusher. Among his other freshman year highlights were an 86-yard run against Baylor, which was an A&M freshman record. Lewis posted five 100-yard rushing games, which were the second-most ever by an A&M freshman. His season-high 171 yards against Oklahoma State ranked as the No. 4 single game effort by an A&M freshman, and his 158 yards against Baylor ranked No. 7 in A&M freshman records.

Sophomore year

An injury and forced Lewis to miss the second game of the season against Wyoming, although he did bounce back back from that injury and rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns, leading Texas A&M to a surprising 27-6 rout of Clemson. He also added 100-yard efforts against Texas Tech and Baylor and ran for 742 yards and 9 TDs on the season, but battling through injuries and inconsistency, nearly half of his season rushing total came in those three games alone.

Junior year

Future Aggie touchdown king Jorvorskie Lane cut into Lewis' carries, but he still managed a very solid year with 723 yards and 7 TDs with an outstanding average of 6.6 yards per carry. He tallied three 100-yard games, with his best performance being a 146 yard effort against Texas Tech. He helped the Aggies beat Baylor in overtime with a 13 yard touchdown run to win the game.

Senior year

With the emergence of Lane and freshman sensation Mike Goodson, Lewis was pushed down the depth chart and finished 2006 with a disappointing 222 yards. Despite the difficult finish to his Aggie career, he still ranks 8th all-time in Texas A&M history with 2,711 rushing yards and 7th all-time with 30 rushing touchdowns.
