The Connaught is a landmark residential apartment building in Sydney, Australia on Liverpool St. overlooking Hyde Park.
History
The Connaught was completed in 1984 by Civil and Civic,[1] builders of the Sydney Opera House, and was one of the first concrete high-rise strata title apartment buildings in Sydney. The building was named after the Duke of Connaught, HRH Prince Arthur, third son of Queen Victoria.
Notable residents over the years have included singers Michael Hutchence and Kylie Minogue, reporter Jana Wendt, film critic Margaret Pomeranz, showbusiness veteran Barry Crocker, Channel 9 Today program entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins, and Sydney Airport chairman and former head of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet Max Moore-Wilton. John B. Fairfax, the largest shareholder of Fairfax Media owns office suites in the building.
In 2003 there was much controversy when long-serving building manager Kerry Killorn was dismissed shortly after a newspaper interview he gave was published about the history of The Connaught in which he named in passing Jana Wendt as a resident.
In early 2009 there is a movement by residents to rename the immediate surrounding precinct to ’Hyde Park’ to coincide with further residential developments alongside The Connaught including "The Hyde" on Liverpool St. and "The Residence" in College St.
