The Comstock Public School District resides in Comstock Charter Township near the city of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Comstock Public Schools also serves portions of Kalamazoo Township, Pavilion Township, City of Portage, Michigan, and the City of Kalamazoo, Michigan. There are approximately 2,500 students enrolled in the district.

Students attend one of six schools:

• Comstock North Elementary
• Comstock Green Meadow Elementary

History

In 1833, a small one room school house was built in the unincorporated village of Comstock, named in honor of Horace Comstock who donated the land and funded its construction. Comstock Village School stood on the location of what is now the site of the old Comstock High School overlooking Gull Prarie Road (now 26th Street). In 1898, the original school building burnt down and was rebuilt as a two room school, providing education for children up to the 9th grade. Children that wanted to continue through high school attended school in either Galesburg or Kalamazoo.

In 1906, a second story was added to Comstock Village School to accommodate grades up through 12th. In 1908, the district graduated its first eight students. Comstock Village School was torn down in 1921 and a new larger school was constructed. In 1936 a Public Works Administration project was announced in the amount of $49,000 to construct an auditorium, gymnasium, football stadium, and a new heating plant at the school. In the 1950s, the elementary schools were constructed in the district and Comstock Village School became Comstock High School.

In 1966, a new high school and athletic stadium complex was built a few miles north of the old school which stands today as the current Comstock High School. The old high school building was used as a middle school up until Comstock Northeast Middle School was built in 1972. The old high school building served as district offices as well as the location for special education and alternative high school programs.

In 2004, the district closed one elementary school and permentenly closed the old high school building. District offices and the alternative high school was relocated to the former elementary school building on Gull Road. In 2005, voters rejected a $49 million bond intended to construct a new high school on the site of the current school, as well as renovate all the other building in the district.

In 2007, voters approved a two year millage to construction of a new football stadium next to Comstock High School.^[2]
