Foundations

Commtel Networks Private Limited, (“Commtel”) was incorporated in July 1998 by Shriprakash R. Pandey with a strong focus on providing value added services in the field of telecommunications. Commtel commenced its business from December 1998 and has been growing at an average rate of 40% for the past 12 years.[2] Mr. Shriprakash, the founder of Commtel is an Engineer by profession and has completed his Advanced Management Program from Indian School of Business, Hyderabad and Kellogg School of Management at Chicago, IL.

Corporate history

Timeline

  • 1998-1999:­­­­

Commtel got established with a team of 14 people operating out of 700 Sq. ft rented premises. They served 7 customers and closed the year with INR 6.2 Million turnover and an EBIDTA of 16%.

  • 1999-2000:

Commtel secured their first overseas services project. Commtel signed the Value Added Re-Seller contract with Nokia Networks Oy. [3]

  • 2000-2001:

Commtel got the first major Turnkey Project from GAIL for the 1200 km long Jamnagar-Loni LPG pipeline while partnering with Nokia Siemens Networks.[4] Commtel engineers performed systems integration and FAT for JLPL at Nokia’s Helsinki facility

  • 2001-2002:

Commtel got projects from GAIL, GSPL and WWW Projects Pvt Ltd. Citibank N.A. offered major financial assistance for business growth to Commtel. It then moved into its own 1700 sq. ft. office also setting up an 800 sq. ft. Systems Integration Center in Navi Mumbai[5]

  • 2002-2003:

Commtel entered the main stream telecom services business by partnering with Nortel Networks and Marconi Communications to deploy large networks[6]

  • 2003-2004:

Notable projects were given to Commtel by GSPL and GAIL. Commtel Networks received ISO 9001:2000 Certification from BVQI[7]

  • 2004-2005:

Increase in the number of customers from 18 to 42 marked Commtel’s market reach which was followed by the Extension of Navi Mumbai office with an additional 1600 sq. ft. area

  • 2005-2006:

Major industry players like L&T, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, PGCIL, WRI, etc. were added to the customer list[citation needed]

  • 2006-2007:

Commtel Network's FZE was established in UAE, a subsidiary company, heralding its international presence. Major projects won directly from GSPL, WRI, APTRANSCO, TCIL, Western Railway and ABB AS.[8] Commtels revenue grew by 85% and EBIDTA stood at 12%

  • 2007-2008:

Commtel made its presence felt even in powerhouse[peacock term] sectors like Railways, and Power apart from sectors like Oil & Gas. A new facility came up at Navi Mumbai which had Commtel’s integration center, 24x7 help desk service point, test bed and training facility

  • 2008-2009:

New Commtel logo was launched with the tag line “Let’s Reach the Next Level”. Commtel started working on the turnkey project from Cairn Energy for deployment of an integrated solution for the Barmer-Bhogat crude pipeline (world’s longest heated pipeline)[9]

  • 2009-2010:

Deployment of telecommunication and surveillance systems for the biggest hydroelectric project undertaken in India from NHPC for its Subansiri Hydroelectric Project. Re-certification of ISO 9001:2008 Certificate by Bureau Veritas

  • 2010-2011:

Bagged an offshore project from an international EPC named SIME DARBY, to equip ONGC’s strategic offshore platform with converged telecommunication systems. Commtel became the official sales partner of CISCO for its products in India. Major projects secured and successfully executed for customers like HPCL, HMEL, GAIL, IOCL and PGCIL

Certifications

Commtel is ISO 9001:2008 certified by Bureau Veritas & accredited by UKAS for Design, Engineering, Integration, Project Implementation, Technical Services & Maintenance of Telecommunication Systems. It has completed two re-certification audits from year 2003.[11]

Turnkey solutions

Commtel Networks design, engineer, integrate, supply, install, test, commission and manage all the activities for turnkey execution of converged telecommunication and surveillance systems projects. Advanced engineering services

Working with the design team of Clients, Commtel identifies their functional requirement and tailor a solution which meets the requirement. Having engineered systems for various applications in the Energy and Hi-Tech sector.

24x7 support and maintenance services

Commtel's Helpdesk service provides Clients technical and operational staff with the assistance needed to resolve problems that may occur in the daily operations of the End-User's network. This support is provided via telephone or an email uninterrupted 24x7.

Front end engineering design

Basic engineering consultancy is followed by a front end engineering design (FEED), which has become a fore front activity, transforming lately into one of the core competencies. The process involved starts with identifying communication needs, defining and developing exhaustive telecommunication requirements and finally establishing the parameters of achieving the end goals.

Expansion

In February 2007, Commtel set up a subsidiary company Commtel Networks (FZC) at the Sharjah Airport International Free Zone, United Arab Emirates. This 5000 sq. feet infrastructure is Commtel’s Systems Integration and Engineering Process Outsource Center that houses several state-of-the-art facilities.

In September 2008, Commtel set up a joint venture in the United States Of America under the name of United Commtel LLC. This company is based in Dallas , TX and will provide converged network solutions to Telecom, Energy and Transport sectors in the North American market.

Commtel under a statement of collaboration has been co-operating with CommTel Network Solutions Pvt Ltd, headquartered in Melbourne, Australia since inception.

Environmental record

Commtel’s systems are designed in providing solutions that find a balance between efficiency, safety and environment. It undergoes exercise both internally and externally, and follows International Standards. It designs systems which are environmentally aware and use very less power and do not require air–conditioning systems thereby saving energy. Stringent safety policies are also followed and care is taken while using a particular product, disposing off the waste in the way it is meant to be. Reduction in usage of paper or minimal usage of paper, always seeking reduction in overall energy usage. This is achieved through procurement of energy efficient equipment, optimum use of lighting and air conditioning systems.[15]

Commtel has developed a 3C model of working principles which can be described as (Conceptualize, Construct and Care). The model focuses on the power of human resources within an enterprise and is aimed at giving a companies customers unfragmented and end-to-end solutions with single point delivery. This model is the focal point of Commtel’s all delivery capabilities. With 'Conceptualize, Construct and Care', Commtel works on the inside with the client's design team, selects the technology for each system, and then provides technically suitable and cost-effective solutions.The 3C engagement model has been serving as the core business philosophy of the Commtel foundation.[11]
