Comisana

Comisana

The Comisana (also known as Lentinese, Red Head, Testa rossa and Faccia rossa) is a breed of domestic sheep from Italy and specifically Sicily. It is a composite breed from the 19th century to early 20th century of the local Maltese and Sicilian. This is a wool breed but is primarily raised for milk.[1]

Characteristics

The Comisana has loppy ears and both sexes are polled (hornless). The face is reddish brown.[1] The body is white (unicolored).[2]

Mature rams weigh 65 kg (140 lb) and ewes weigh 40 kg (88 lb). At the withers and at maturity, rams grow to about 75 cm (30 in) and ewes to 60 cm (24 in).[2] Mature ewes can produce 2.0 l (0.53 US gal) per day during a well managed lactation period.[3]
