Evelyn Murphy is an American politician. She was the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts from 1987 to 1991, and was the first woman in the history of Massachusetts to hold a state-wide office.

She received a bachelor's degree and PhD from Duke University, and holds a master's degree from Columbia University. She was the Secretary of Economic Affairs in the first term of Governor Mike Dukakis. In 1982, she sought the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor, losing to John Kerry. In the second term of Governor Dukakis, she was the Secretary for Environmental affairs. In 2005, she published the book "Getting Even: Why Women Don't Get Paid Like Men and What to Do About It."

Murphy was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination for Governor of Massachusetts in 1990, losing the nomination to John Silber.
