Roper was a right-handed batsman who played primarily as a wicketkeeper.
Roper represented Hampshire in a single first-class match in 1957 against Oxford University. In his only first-class innings Roper made 7 runs before being dismissed by Jack Bailey.
In 1959 Roper joined Dorset where he made his Minor Counties Championship debut against Berkshire. From 1959 to 1969, Roper played 80 Minor Counties Championship matches for Dorset, with his final match coming against the Somerset Second XI. Roper also played a single List-A match for Dorset against Bedfordshire in the 1968 Gillette Cup, where in his only List-A innings Roper was dismissed for a duck by Bill Bushby.
