History
Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion de la Concordia, was founded by a generous Doña Margarita Roxas de Ayala. Gifted with a vision to provide a Catholic education for the poor and deserving young girls, she converted her three-and-a-half-hectare villa, the La Concordia Estate in Paco, Manila, into a school.
Attracted by the dedication and devotion of the hijas de la Caridad, popularly known today as Daughters of Charity, who taught and cared for the poor, the generous matron did not hesitate to request for eight Daughters of Charity from Spain. She arranged for the Sister's travel expenses so that they could come over to the Philippines and manage the school.
On May 3, 1868, the first eight Sisters arrived and managed the operation of the school; the school was a free school, Escuela Pia. With a small enrollment of sixty students, the curriculum emphasized religion, good manners, reading and writing, simple arithmetic, culture and arts like sewing, embroidery, cooking, needlecraft and household work. The medium of the instruction was Spanish.
However, significant periods in the development of the Concordia College, such as the Philippine Revolution of 1896 and the American era, to name a few, brought about educational reforms as can be seen in the following historical dates.
Since its birth in 1868, Concordia College has remained steadfast in being the voice and arm of the Catholic Church. It will continue to address life with the Vincentian Vision and Mission, Core Values and thrusts inculcated in the students, personnel, parents, alumni and lay partners, as it moves with the lates technology and shifts in paradigms in the third millennium.
Daughters of Charity
The Daughters of Charity is a company consecrated woman founded by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac who engage themselves in multiple form of service of persons who are poor. They are found in schools, hospitals, refugees center, social service centers, orphanages, parish community building activities, and in general community services – wherever the poor are found; for God has called and assembled the Daughters of Charity to honor our Lord Jesus Christ as the source and model of all charity, serving Him corporally and spiritually in the person of the poor.”
It was in a simple house in Paris, on November 29, 1633, that Vincent de Paul entrusted to Louise De Marillac, of noble lineage, the first twelve Daughters of Charity to live their ideal of serving God in the suffering members of Christ. Soon simple village girls joined them to be "Servants of the Poor". And like a mustard seed that has grown into a big tree, the little Company of Daughters of Charity grew steadily.
The call heard by the first sisters is ever the same. The Little Company knows no boundaries. Today, throughout the world, in Africa, Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe, the Daughters of Charity continue to penetrate the world of the poor with their missionary presence and active service. In their life of contemplation and service, they take Mary, the Immaculate One as the perfect example of those who "hear the word of God and keep it."
