Anthony Tommasini is chief music critic for "
The New York Times ". He is also a book author andpianist .Tommasini was born in
Brooklyn and raised onLong Island . He received a Bachelor of Arts degree fromYale University in 1970, a Master of Music degree from Yale School of Music, received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree fromBoston University in 1982.Tommasini taught music at
Emerson College in Boston and gave writing workshops atWesleyan University andBrandeis University . He wrote "Virgil Thomson: Composer on the Aisle" (which received the 1998ASCAP -Deems Taylor Award) and "Opera: A Critic's Guide to the 100 Most Important Works and the Best Recordings".Tommasini has received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Boston University.
