Claypit Hill School

Claypit Hill School

Claypit Hill School is an elementary school in Wayland, Massachusetts, United States. Claypit Hill has an enrollment of 600 students in grades 1 through 5. There are 30 classrooms with an average of 22 students per class.[1]

History

The school was built in 1957. Since then it has undergone numerous additions and renovations. In the 1985-86 academic year, the United States Department of Education awarded Claypit Hill Elementary School with the Outstanding Progress Toward Excellence in Education award.

Claypit Hill Elementary School derives its name from the pits excavated by early Native Americans to extract clay to make pottery. Because of the hill's proximity to the Sudbury River, they could take this clay down to the riverbank to work it into pots. Some of these pits are still in existence today.
