Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1, originally titled Aqua Teen Hunger Force from its premiere in 2000 until 2011,[1] is an American animated television series on Cartoon Network's late night programming block, Adult Swim. A rough-cut "stealth" version of the pilot episode, "Rabbot", originally aired on December 30, 2000, unannounced, on Cartoon Network, about eight months before Adult Swim officially launched.[2] The series later made its official debut with "Escape from Leprechaupolis" on September 9, 2001, on Adult Swim.
The series was created by Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro, who write and direct most episodes, and provide the voices of several characters.[3] The series was inspired by the Space Ghost Coast to Coast episode "Baffler Meal", which introduced early rough-cut versions of the three main characters.[4] Despite the series title change in 2011, all existing episodes made before 2011 are still considered Aqua Teen Hunger Force episodes; whereas all episodes as of "Allen Part 1" are considered Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1 episodes. The series has been renewed for a ninth season, which will premiere on May 20, 2012, and will contain ten episodes.[5]
As of July 24, 2011[update], 109 episodes of the series have aired. Seasons 1–8 are available on DVD in Region 1 and Region 4; in addition episodes are also available on iTunes and the "Build a Custom DVD" feature on the Adult Swim website.[6] An episode relating to the 2007 Boston bomb scare, entitled "Boston", was produced and set to air in 2008, but was pulled to avoid further controversy surrounding the incident. As of 2011 "Boston" has never aired or been released to the public in any format.[7]
On April 13, 2007, a feature film based on the series, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, premiered in theaters,[8] and a second film titled Death Fighter has begun production.[9]
