Cinema under the Stars takes place every year since 1996 in summertime at the Viennese Augarten and provides the audience a demanding Open-Air Movie Event with 900 seating places: rarely seen classics, premieres, original versions of successful movies with subtitles. Comfort: screening techniques and technical equipment at the highest stage, a 200m2 big screen, excellent view for every single visitor. Every year the international culinary offer at the Gastronomy Alley brings back an enthusiastic audience.

HISTORY
Cinema under the Stars started in the year 1996 in the context of the celebration of a jubilee ,regarding the creation of cinema, as the first Open-Air cinema in Vienna, Austria, in the baroque Augarten.
In the year 1997 and 1998 a co-operation between Cinema under the Stars and the international Viennese Filmfestival Viennale occurred.
2001 a collaboration with SYNEMA, association for film and media, took place. The known program expanded with an additional series of lectures named “déjà W I E N“ on Sundays.
In 2002 the Special “Amok” dealt with the topics globalisation and violence. In the course of a picnic Franzobel,Paulus Hochgatterer and others were giving lectures.
2003 is characterized by a co-operation with the Austrian Film Museum called “Zweigroschenzauber”.
2004 Cinema under the Stars was welcoming Ray Harryhausen, who visited the event and presented his movies.
2006 the anniversary celebration of 10 years Cinema under the Stars took place. For that the usual surrounding area had to change a bit because of the fact that the close Flakturm threatened to collapse.

1998 “Blaxploitation”
1999 „Space Oddities“
Space Oddities showed seven movies, which dealt with topics like nostalgic futurism, research of future full of relish and black holes. A journey through the stars from Hollywood to the DDR.
2001 “moving [AI]”
Eight movies are telling stories about mental mutation and impending self-deprivation: what is called identity unravels, transforms, continuously defines and configures itself new.
2002 “Hammer – House of Horror”
Micky Hardin, daughter of "Hammer House of Horror"-Director Terence Fisher (“Dracula”), attended Cinema under the Stars, watching her fathers movie “The Mummy”, to talk about Terence Fisher, his studio and his work in the context of the opening of this Special.
2003 “Dress Code”
2004 “Ray Harryhausen – Master of Stop Motion”
This Special was devoted to the work of Ray Harryhausen, a specialist for animated movies, who in his early years draw the attention on him through working in Stop Motion. He put life into mythical creatures and changed the film industry sustainable. Harryhausen came to Vienna and presented some of his work in the course of Cinema under the Stars.
